District Governor’s message:
Fellow Lions and Leos

Fellow Lions and Leos;

Happy New Year to you and your families.  I hope you all enjoyed the holiday season.  This year is really flying by – it has been seven months since the convention in Sydney.

I am absolutely enjoying every minute of this year – I knew it would be a lot of work, decisions to be made, club visitations – and I love it.  My most favorite part is visiting the clubs.

Many of you have heard me quote International President Sid Scruggs, “people don’t remember what you say, or what you do – they remember how you make them feel”.  I have felt humbled, encouraged, and welcomed at all of the club visits.  Thank you for your friendship, your support and all your hard work.

As of December 31, 2010, our district is plus 19 members.  We have 5 months left this year – so I am encouraged by these numbers.
Our District has participated in the Peace Poster, Speech, Environmental Photo and Essay Contests.  Thank you for your efforts to support these programs.

Congratulations to the Ashland Lions on the formation of our newest Leo club.  I am looking forward to inducting all of the new Leos in the next month.
Our Midwinter conference is a few short weeks away.  Hope to see many of you at the Mardi gras party hosted by my club the Quincy Lions, the business meeting, the banquet, or at the hospitality room.  International Director Dr. Sonja “Sunny” Pulley will be our guest for the weekend.

CST Tom and I have visited more than half of the clubs and will continue to visit during the upcoming months.  I am so proud to be from Special K.

I am asking the Zones and Region chairs to review the Club Excellence and Secretary Excellence award criteria with all of the clubs.  These awards are attainable and I would love to present as many clubs and individuals with awards as possible.  The PRIDE pins will be presented at our third advisory meeting scheduled for March 14, 2011 – details with be forthcoming.

You are Beacons of Hope to so many people – you change lives one at a time.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime – to serve as your District Governor.  Hope to see many of you at the Midwinter Conference.  If you need anything from the District, please do not hesitate to contact me – I am only a phone call or email away.

Yours in Lionism
DG Joyce

Fellow Lions:

Our 51st Annual Mid-Winter Conference will be held on February 18, 19, and 20, 2011, at the Hilton Boston/Dedham Hotel in Dedham. This is a great weekend to celebrate the successes we have had this year and to also show our enthusiasm for Lionism. This is a great opportunity for long-time Lions as well as new Lions to get together with the entire District for an entertaining and informative event.

The weekend will have something to offer for everyone. Friday evening will commence with a Mardi Gras Party featuring the Neal Perry Orchestra / Band. Join us for a night of entertainment, light cuisine and fun. Come in theme costume or come as you are. Prizes will be awarded for the best attire.

Saturday begins with breakfast and our business meeting. This provides an opportunity to see first hand what is going on in the District as well as make Club donations. Following the business meeting you will have the opportunity to take part in one or more of several seminars (Membership Orientation-Blue Badge, Best Practices Round Table, etc.). In the afternoon, you can enjoy the Youth Speech Contest and visit our sales/display tables. Saturday evening will kick off with an International Director’s Reception and a terrific banquet (a great place to honor a member with a MJF) and of course, following the banquet will be our hospitality suites offering more fun and entertainment.

Registration is easy- Call the Hilton Boston/Dedham Hotel at 800-HILTONS (group name-District 33K Lions) before February 10th and reserve your room (rates are only $79 plus tax) and fill out the enclosed Meal/Registration form and mail to PDG Hank Tamagno today to reserve your seat at the banquet.

If your Club is interested in a sales/display table please notify Lion John J. MacGilvray IN WRITING at 234 Main Street, North Chelmsford, MA 01863- tables are reserved on a first come, first served basis.

All Clubs are encouraged to bring their Club Banners for display in the grand ballroom. Lion Ken Lake will be collecting them at the hotel beginning Friday.

Let’s all join together and make this a weekend that shows everyone the dedication and fun that the Lions of District 33K have! We look forward to seeing you there.

Environmental Photo Contest
As you know maintaining and keeping a healthy environment affects each and every one of us whether it be in our personal life or work place.

It is the continuing policy of Lions Club International to foster and promote the general welfare; to help create and maintain conditions under which man and nature can exist in productive harmony and fulfill the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations of mankind.

Each year Lions Club International holds an “Environmental Photo Contest”. Each club can submit one photo to the District for consideration. After review, the District will select one photo to be submitted to the Multiple District 33, representing District 33K. The deadline for submission was December 10, 2010. The following are the 5 photos that will be considered at the upcoming Midwinter in February.

Strengthening membership is important for both new and long-term Lions alike. For new Lions, it's about getting acquainted with a new service organization. For long-term Lions, it's about getting back to the basics.

Lions-Measles Initiative Program to Protect 41 Million Kids
As part of the Lions-Measles Initiative pilot program, Lions are helping vaccinate 41 million children against measles, a leading cause of childhood blindness. LCIF Chairperson Eberhard Wirfs recently traveled to Madagascar with staff from international headquarters to help vaccinate at-risk children. In seven days, our effort reached 2.6 million people in Madagascar alone. Overall, we hope to reach at least 95 percent of children ages 9 to 47 months in Ethiopia, Mali, Madagascar and Nigeria by early 2011. Read our blog for a behind-the-scenes look at this program.

Do the Write Thing

The Lions International Essay Contest offers you a wonderful opportunity to support local visually impaired youth. And to promote your club by working with local schools and families to identify young people who are interested in participating. The contest is open to visually-impaired students, ages 11-13. One grand prize winner will receive an award and US$5,000. The theme for the essay is "Power of Peace." Each essay must be submitted in English with a completed entry form, be no longer than 500 words, type written in black ink and double-spaced. Download complete rules and entry form.

Peace Poster Contest Theme Announced
For more than 20 years, the Lions International Peace Poster Contest has given young people a chance to express their visions of peace. And now, we're excited to announce the theme for our 2011-2012 Contest - "Children Know Peace." If your club would like to sponsor a contest in a local school or youth group, Peace Poster Contest Kits will go on sale on January 15, 2011 from Club Supplies.  Learn more about the 2011-2012 Peace Poster Contest, including how to order a kit.

New and Improved Service Activity Report

We've recently redesigned the Lions Club Service Activity Report to provide clubs with more tools to monitor their service activities and share information with others. The new system allows club and district officers to designate signature activities and set service goals that can be tracked throughout the year. Officers can also search activities that other clubs choose to share using key words, geographic location, program area and other criteria.  Learn more about the report and upcoming informational Webcasts.
Lions Can Help Children in Need

If your club would like to plan a project to help children in need, here's great news! The Lions Children First program has the tools and resources you need to organize a food or clothing drive, host a vision or hearing screening, promote literacy in local schools and more.  Review the Lions Children First Program Kit for materials you can use to implement a successful Lions Children First project in your community.

District Governor’s message:
Fellow Lions and Leos

My wish for you is that you have beautiful Holiday Season, and a New Year filled with Peace and Happiness.

I am so grateful for all of your efforts. We are having a good year – membership is up – there is energy in the district.

At our second advisory meeting held in Marlboro on November 29, 2010, 178 Lions and guests attended. We collected three shopping carts of food. Toys, games, puzzles and a bike will help make some children very happy this Christmas. Again thank you for your generosity. We are planning to continue the food drive at the next two advisories.

I can’t believe it has been six months since I was installed as District Governor. This year is really flying by, but I am enjoying every minute of it.

International President Sid’s theme is a Beacon of Hope – I have been saying that Hope means – Helping Other People Everyday. That is what each of you are doing – changing lives one person at a time.

You are all volunteers and you don’t have to donate your time like you do - but you are willing to help those in need.

Our Midwinter Conference is scheduled for February 18-20,2011 at the Dedham Hilton. My club the Quincy Lions is planning a Mardi Gras party for Friday evening. Saturday we will have the business meeting, leadership seminars, the youth speech contest, the banquet and the hospitality rooms. Once again the Leos have been invited to attend and participate in our opening ceremony on Saturday morning. Our guest for the weekend is International Director Sonja “Sunny” Pulley from Oregon – I know that you will all enjoy meeting her.

We have six months left and I know we still have a lot of work to do. I am very grateful for the support I have received over the past six months.

I am proud to be a Quincy Lion and proud to be your Governor – I am only a phone call or email away if you need anything please let me know.

Yours in Lionism
DG Joyce

Senior Lions Leadership Institute

This year the Senior Lions Leadership Institute (SLLI) was held November 18th-21st in Albuquerque, NM. I was one of 100 Lions and 10 LCI staff members from all over the United States, Canada and Bermuda that attended. I wish to thank District Governor Joyce for the opportunity.

It was a busy four days with workshops that started at 8:00am and went until 5:30pm. We literally slept, ate, worked and played together for the entire weekend. We went back to our rooms at night to work on assignments for the next day, but like most leadership weekends I have attended; it was well worth all of the hard work.

I met Lions from Wyoming, California, Nevada and Hawaii. Of course there were people from much closer to home like Connecticut, New York and Maine. We have shared pictures, holiday cards and well wishes since our return.

Most of the workshops were pertinent and creative. LCI brought a group of strangers together and had us all working as a team in a matter of 15 minutes. The reason this could be done was because we all had a common purpose and that was “We Serve.” We had our individual ideas, talents, weaknesses, successes and failures but like all Lions clubs, we worked together to lift each other up and reach our common goals.

They showed us how to solicit new ideas from club members and set priorities on fundraisers and service projects. We were taught how to get everyone’s ideas out in the open and acted upon by looking at the same old project in a different light or developing a whole new plan for a brand new fundraiser. We all need to look “outside the box.” We learned the history of Lions Clubs International Foundation, the different types of grants they have and most importantly, how to apply for an LCIF Grant.

I met many great Lions in Albuquerque and I met many strong Lion leaders. I have a better understanding of how important each club and member are because in one weekend I witnessed how a group of 100 strangers can come together and truly make a difference in our association and the world.

Vice CST Peggy Cahill
